The Massachusetts Guardianship Policy Institute is excited to offer a new initiative – Guardianship Rounds. Based on the concept of hospital Grand Round, we will begin with a case presentation from an experienced guardian who will discuss the major issues and features of a particular case as well as the case outcome, if it has already occurred. We will then open up the floor to questions, comments and suggestions from participants. In addition to the educational program, the event will offer lunch and a networking opportunity to guardians in the New England area.

This month’s case will be presented by Kathi Monteith, Principal of KJM Guardianship in Shelburne, Vermont. Ms. Monteith will discuss issues around autonomy for an elderly man whose guardian was his brother. The case involves the man’s desire to return to Alaska, his home of 40 years, and the consequences of his guardian’s financial exploitation. This complex case will provide an opportunity to discuss the balance between autonomy and risk.
